iTunes Genius

On Tuesday September 9th Apple released the latest version of iTunes, Version 8.  The main upgrade, besides a much cleaner grid format for viewing your music, is a feature called Genius.  What is does is create a playlist from your iTunes library based on a particular song you select.  So if, for example, you're currently listening to "Barriers" from Aerogramme like I was, and you hit the Genius button, iTunes creates a customized playlist based on what you have in your library that's similar to "Barrier."  In this instance I got the following:

  1. Aerogramme - "Barriers"
  2. Jesu - "You Wear Their Masks"
  3. Pelican - "A Delicate Sense of Balance"
  4. ...And You Will Know Us From the Trail of Dead - "Naked Sun"
  5. Boris & Michio Kurihara - "No Sleep Till I Become Hollow"
  6. Okkervil River - "Savannah Smiles"
  7. Codeseven - "The Camel City"
  8. Melvins - "A Vast Filthy Prison"
  9. This Will Destroy You - "There Are Some Worse Remedies"
  10. Bloodhorse - "The Goat"
Which is much more cohesive that I would have guessed.  So far a really cool feature and I'm looking forward to seeing how successful it is with other songs.
